The cakes are made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils (de-husked) and rice. The fermentation process breaks down the starches so that they are more readily.

The ingredients needed to make Idli:
  1. Get 2 cup Idly rava
  2. Prepare 1 cup Urrad dal
  3. Make ready 2 tbsp Poha thick
  4. Get 1 tsp Methi seeds
  5. Prepare 1 tsp sugar

Steps to make Idli:
  1. Soak 1 cup of urraddal + thick poha and methi seeds for 8 hours.
  2. Grind it in mixer the next day. Let it be in a warm place for 8 hours until the batter raises a bit.
  3. Keep it for 24 hours and then add idly rava and sugar and make slightly thick batter. Once the batter is ready, pour the batter in idli plates. Heat it on medium flame for 15-20 minutes. serve hot with Sambhar or chutney

I am sharing both the methods in this post. Making idli using rava is a breeze, we don't need to grind the rice to make the batter.
