The ingredients needed to make Oat Upma:
  1. Take 1 cup Oats
  2. Prepare 1 Onion chopped (medium sized)
  3. Take 2 Green chillies chilli / broken red dried
  4. Prepare 4 - 5 Curry leaves
  5. Get 1/2 tsp Chana dal
  6. Take 1/2 tsp Urad dal
  7. Take 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  8. Make ready 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
  9. Make ready pinch Hing
  10. Make ready 1 tbsp Oil
  11. Make ready 1.5 tbsps Peanuts (roasted)
  12. Prepare pinch Turmeric powder
  13. Prepare to taste Salt
  14. Make ready 1/2 tsp Lemon juice
  15. Take 1 Tomato lemon small  (finely chopped) skip if you use
  16. Make ready Corriander leaves   for garnish
  17. Prepare 1 tbsp coconut Grated as you desire (optional)
  18. Make ready 1/4 tsp Ginger chopped (optional)

Oats upma also makes for a healthy tiffin box snack. Heat ½ tsp oil in a shallow frying pan. Have you ever tried making upma with oats? Upma, a very common and quick South Indian breakfast dish, is not very popular unlike its counterpart, the famous Masala Dosa.

Instructions to make Oat Upma:
  1. Roast oats for about 5 - 10 minutes in a wide pan on a medium flame until it turns light brown. Set this aside to cool. This helps to remove the husky smell.
  2. Heat a pan with oil. Add the following:  Mustard seeds, cumin seeds, peanuts - preferably broken, chana and urad dal and fry till golden.
  3. Add Hing, Ginger, Chili, Curry leaves and fry till the leaves turn crisp
  4. Add onions and fry till they turn transparent. Meanwhile, rinse the oats in a colander under running water and drain up the entire water.
  5. Once the onions are well fried add turmeric. If you prefer to use tomato you can add it now and fry till it turns mushy and reduce the flame to low.
  6. Add the rinsed oats, sprinkle salt. mix well. Cover and cook for about 6 to 7 minutes. stirring occasionally till fully cooked.
  7. If needed you can sprinkle little water, if you want it to be mushy.
  8. Add grated coconut, coriander leaves and lemon juice. Mix well and serve.

People either love or hate Upma. I know of many kids and adults alike who hate to hear the phrase 'upma for breakfast'. I don't belong to that category, though. Oats Upma makes a great tasting, spicy yet reasonably healthy breakfast. When I tried Oats Upma for the first time, I wasn't expecting it to come out too well and taste too good.
